Perfect time management: compiling a Voodoo Detective walkthrough almost immediately after posting the review. The following is a guide for this stunning point and click adventure. It’s a relatively brief one, and there are no achievements, so this is to get you through to one of two endings (spoiler: you can load your save file and see both).

As always, with a point-and-click game, exhaust all dialogue options, and note that with Voodoo Detective, while there isn’t a Sierra-style game over, consider your dialogue choices when asked if you want to continue; otherwise, you’ll receive early credits. That said, you can load immediately from your last autosave.

Voodoo Detective Walkthrough

From your office, click on the Baron Samedi mask to reveal a bar. Take the seltzer and use it on the fire. Pick up the candle and answer the phone, then the door. Exhaust the dialogue, accept Mary’s case, and then leave the room.

Walk left to the Fontule Estate and try the greenhouse door, then the mansion. When inside the mansion, head to Victor’s office for a cutscene, then go into Benny’s room at the left of the stairs and collect the letter on the desk and the book under the bed. Go back to the office and meet Victor, then leave. Talk to Benny and exhaust the conversation, leaving the estate and heading to Donut Hole Billy’s in the centre of town.

Exhaust the conversation with Ricky, giving him the letter from Benny. Take the bucket on the chair and use it on Billy (playing the piano). Then, use the chair on him, followed by the gauntlet, and finally, use the harmonica on Voodoo. Talk to Billy and obtain Grammy’s book, then go back to the mansion to give the letter to Benny.

After Benny receives the letter, ask about the greenhouse to obtain a key. Use that to get some lemon and mint, giving the latter to Ricky at Donut Hole Billy’s to get the mortar and pestle. Leave and go to the Island Trader and pick up the camera, then collect the screwdriver and pay for it with your coins. Return to the office and use the screwdriver on the speaker. Leave the office and go to the bank, using the candle and the ink on the counter to get a black candle. Head outside and combine the items from Grammy’s book to create the Owner Honer (Put the lemon in the mortar, then the black candle, followed by the magnet) that will take you to the cemetery to the East.

At the cemetery, head North to the mausoleum, then speak to Eartha and find out she wants a shovel. Speak to the clerk at the Island Trader, followed by Victor in his office at the mansion, about the shovel, go back to the Trader to purchase it, then hand the shovel to Eartha. Next is Theodore at Laughton Law, next to the bank.

After exhausting the dialogue, leave the building and use the ladder to the room, using the screwdriver on the vent, click on it and then head to the restaurant at the hotel and order the fugo fish to get the poison gland after finishing speaking with the waiter. Next, speak to Kiki, sitting on the right and exhaust conversations. After acquiring her key, go into the hotel and use the lift, go to the far end to speak to Mary,  then return to the Trader and give him the camera for some photos. These can be handed either to Theodore or Kiki. At Laughton Law, use the filing cabinet and get the mausoleum key and receipt, then return to the cemetery to use it. Locate Geneivere’s coffin and note the dates (9th September 1909, or 090909), then head back to Crumbsford Capital.

Ask the clerk about opening an account and then go into Gordon’s office. Find out about his love of chocolate, then purchase some at the Trader’s, combine it with the fugo fish and give it to Gordon. Check his filing cabinet for an approval form to give to the clerk, enter any old number, then enter the vault and look at your receipt to see box 203. Open this using the date from the coffin (090909) and read the journal, then go back to Victor, then on to your office to collect a letter.

The Boat

Take the apple and knife and talk to the bartender. Speak to the singer, then take the door to the East and again to the East into the engine room. Take the spanner and open the firebox. When you leave the room, use the spanner on the door to lock in the captain, then head up to the deck. Look at the lifeboat, then go into the pilot’s house and take the pencil and paper, then go back to the singer and give it to him for an autograph. Mix the autograph with the apple, then the simple syrup and then cut the apple in half with the knife. Give each apple to the singer and bartender. With the singer, keep clicking ‘Come on’ to persuade him.

Go into the toilet, then close the stall door. Interact with the toilet handle and use it on Voodoo to swallow it, then leave the room. Back in the hall, use the rum on Voodoo twice to throw up the handle, then take this to the Pilot House and use it with the fuses. Finally, head to the lifeboat and follow the cutscene.

The Island

After landing on land, pick up the pail of sand and go into the shipwreck. Attempt to interact with the trophy and speak with the ghost. Go to your inventory, and he’ll notice the necklace and give you some exposition. Make sure to talk to him and exhaust the options, then take the trophy, charcoal, cup, and cereal from the cupboard. Place the trophy in the pot, interact with the stove and take the sulfur residue from the hood. Exit the shipwreck and use the cereal on the bird to get a feather. Leave the area and head into the jungle.

Collect the guano from the rock (combine it with the charcoal, sulphur and mug in your inventory), then head up the mountain path to collect the plunger and the tax book, then inspect the skeleton for some teeth. Head further up the mountain and use the mug on the cliff’s edge, followed by the plunger. After the cutscene, return to the top of the mountain and interact with the statues, making sure to take the small clay pot and the ason. Use the teeth with the ason, then use the sand on the central pillar, then use the ason on the same place.

Head through the North door and use the feather on Victor’s statue to get the cane, then exit and head through the east door. Put your hand in the box, and on the second time, use the tax book on Voodoo to numb the pain, then interact with the box again to get the pipe. Put both the cane and pipe on the central statue and head West.

Move all statues so that their left arms face up (interact with the right arm in the dialogue), except for Theodore: both arms need to be down. Next, play the harmonica, and Victor’s statue should lower the hat for you to take, allowing you to place it on the central statue in the next room. A cutscene will follow, and you can then speak to Papa in the office, then leave the room and use the sign of Papa on Voodoo and head off to Ventures Island on the East, then head into the woods. Keep heading North until the scenery changes, then West, then you’ll return to the beach. Use the sign of Papa to head to Zo Wanga Isle.

Zo Wanga Isle

Go straight into the bank and take the ink, then head to the hotel and speak to the zombie outside holding a flower. Head back to the cemetery’s mausoleum, speak to Gordon’s ghost, and agree to help him if he helps you. Follow the Urn a Soul spell in the book, using the clay pot on him, the ink and some money. Exit the cemetery as the sign of Papa will not work.

Ventures Island

Use it to head back to the forest in Ventures Island and listen to Gordon so you can reach the factory and head inside. Take the coffee cup at the end of the room and open the cabinet to your left to get a washcloth. Use the latter on the coffee machine and use the cup to make… coffee. Mix the coffee with the flower and use it on Voodoo.

Head into the office in the top right and inspect the trash can to get a gum wrapper, then obtain a battery from the filing cabinets. Use both the wrapper and battery to make a fire, then interact with the desk to locate a safe. Open the safe with the power of caffeine to get a key until Victor shows up. Combine the washcloth with the rum, then with the fire to make a Molotov cocktail and use on Billy, then take a diamond from the safe to use on the window opposite and interact to jump out.

Head West and use the utility box to get a Halligan. Head East, use the console, and move the crane to the far left to grab a barrel, then drop it in the turbine to the right. Then, when Victor shows up, head onto the conveyor belt below to return to the starting area, then return to where you dropped the barrel and use the Halligan on the manhole and drop down. Use the control panel and increase the juicer and beacon, returning up the ladder and then back to where you found the Halligan. Put the machine at full speed and then take the Soul Beacon, then use the sign of Papa.

The Final Battle

You’ll now battle Victor, so use Private Eye to locate his weaknesses, make a note of the moves, and then use that against him. With a successful attack, his weakness will change. If he’s blocking, use Private Eye to locate the weakness. If he’s blocking and you’ve used the latter, block as well, then attack with the weakness. Note that the Apple of My Eye will charm him. If he loads his gun, immediately use the shield.

Once you’ve defeated him, you return back to your office, and Papa informs you Baron Samedi takes a liking to you and gives you a free pass for reincarnation. If you want to use that as insurance for Voodoo in later instalments, you can save Mary. Use the Baron Samedi sign on Voodoo and make your decision, then leave the office… The choice is yours, and either way, you can load your last save game to get both brief endings.
