Midnight Souls Preview – Check It Out Before They Pull The Plug
People are strange, especially those in Chamomile Peaks.
On the theme of being timed, I didn’t know there was a limited time to play Midnight Souls. I’d got the code for the demo, though I saw it was available for Johnny Public on Steam, so I assumed there was time.
Alas, after midnight on whatever day it was, it was removed from Steam and could no longer be found in my library. Fortunately, I have an acute memory and will therefore recall all the stuff I had witnessed, without being able to jump back in. What was I doing again?
Ah yes, Midnight Souls. An upcoming supernatural RPG-type adventure, with turn-based battles and quirky situations, from developer Bolshakov Sergey. There’s a very ominous mood, which is understandable, given that you’re heading to Chamomile Peaks to meet a girl you’ve yet to meet.
Before we link any catfishing, your trusty feline pal, Charlie, will be joining you, so at least you get some puss- yes, yes, ‘low-hanging fruit’. After a train ride there, you immediately encounter a thug who very generously introduces you to a fight, and returns later.
Some Sort Of Pilgrimage
The artwork in Midnight Souls is consistent and suits the genre very well, without being too abstract, and introducing a multitude of styles. It’s a bit like Scott Pilgrim in that sense, and also the link to evil ex-boyfriends.

You already know when things are moving too fast when the girl you’re going to meet, who, thankfully, looks like the person you set out for, invites you to their grubby home to tell you that you’ll be staying there, not her. Hmmm…
She strictly tells you no pets, so once she’s left, you take out your cat and set out to earn yourself some cash, earning a few coins. After this harmless little scavenger hunt, you end up drinking vodka and getting ratted.
Whilst drunk, you talk to your new bestie about how wonderful your girlfriend is, to which the gentleman drinking with you advises that is not your girlfriend. There’s something loaded in the wording, and it’s nothing to do with punching above your weight.
Baby, When The Lights Go Out…
The lights go out, and then you find yourself walking around an increasingly creepy apartment block that seems to shift with menace, and it’s no longer as charming as it first appeared. At least, that’s what I remember of it, as I can’t go back at this time.
Midnight Souls was in a playtest at this point, and like our hero, I was unaware the electric would be switched off, and I would no longer have access to it. Fortunately, I recall a good deal and thinking that this was one to potentially watch, what with its Twin Peaks vibes and intriguing premise.
It’s not due until next year, so besides wishlisting it and hoping for a demo, alternatives you could consider are Decarnation and perhaps Mondealy – if you want something a bit more colourful and upbeat.
